Policy orientation and market transformation
2024-04-07 15:00The applications for the biodegradable PLA, compostable material PLA are promising.
Plastic pollution can be reduced by 80 per cent within 2040 if countries and businesses make deep policy and market transformations using existing technologies.
The report highlights the direction of action and change needed to end plastic pollution and create a circular economy, and points to the need for countries to build on existing technologies with positive market initiatives and policy direction. In addition, it is crucial that the world halves plastic products and cuts single-use plastic consumption in the coming years in order to curb the increase in environmental pollution.
First, unnecessary plastic use needs to be eliminated to reduce the magnitude of the problem. Secondly, three market shifts are called for, namely reuse, recycling and repositioning of diversified products. Of these, promotion of reuse options, including refillable water bottles, bulk dispensers, deposit return programs, and packaging recycling programs can reduce plastic pollution by 30% by 2040.
Another 17% reduction in plastic pollution can be achieved by manufacturing products from alternative materials such as paper or compostable materials such as PLA sheet and replacing products such as plastic wrappers, pouches, and take-out items.
