LDPE classification, performance and application

2023-12-25 14:44

How is LDPE made?

LDPE is produced at high pressure (1000-3000 Pa) and temperature (80-300°C). It is derived through a free radical polymerization process. There are two basic processes for producing LDPE:

Stirred autoclave reactor

Tubular reactor

Tubular reactors are increasingly preferred over the autoclave route due to their higher ethylene conversion.

What are the characteristics of LDPE?

Low density polyethylene melting point: 105 to 115°C

Low density polyethylene density: 0.910–0.940 g/cm3

Chemical resistance of low density polyethylene:

Good tolerance to alcohols, dilute bases and acids

Limited resistance to aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, mineral oils, oxidizing agents and halogenated hydrocarbons

The temperature resistance can reach 80°C continuously and 95°C in a short time.

Low-cost polymer with good processing properties

High low temperature impact strength and good weather resistance

Excellent electrical insulation

Very low water absorption

film transparent

LDPE is mainly used to make containers, dispensing bottles, washing bottles, pipes, computer component plastic bags, and various molded laboratory equipment. The most popular application of LDPE is in plastic bags.
