What are the characteristics of PS plastic and what fields can it be used in?

PS plastic has various characteristics such as a wide melting temperature range, good thermal stability, good fluidity, and easy molding. Moreover, the water absorption rate of the plastic is very low, and it does not need to be dried before molding. In addition, it has a wide range of applications. Generally Most of them are used in the building materials industry。

(1) PS is an amorphous plastic with a wide melting temperature range and good thermal stability;

(2) Thermal deformation temperature is 70~100℃, viscous flow temperature is 150~204℃, and decomposition occurs above 300℃;

(3) The viscosity of PS melt is moderately sensitive to temperature and shear rate, has good fluidity, and is easy to form;

(4) The water absorption rate of PS plastic is very low, generally 0.01 to 0.03%. It does not need to be dried before molding. [If necessary, it can be dried in circulating hot air at 70 to 80°C for 2 to 3 hours].

(5) The barrel temperature during injection molding is controlled within the range of 180 to 215°C, and the nozzle temperature is 10 to 20°C lower than the maximum temperature of the barrel.

(6) The injection pressure is generally controlled at 60~150MPa. For products with large gates, simple shapes and thick walls, the injection pressure can be lower, about 60 to 80MPa.

(7) It is easy to form internal stress and cause cracking, and the problem of residual stress is more prominent. In order to reduce internal stress, higher material and mold temperatures are often required during processing, so that the melt cools slowly and the oriented molecules are relaxed. You can also choose a grade with high fluidity or add fluidity additives.

2. Application scope of PS plastic

Building materials industry: PS plastic can be used in the building materials industry. Its strength is very high and its size is relatively stable. It will not deform to a great extent even in high-temperature environments.

If it receives a strong impact from the outside world, the impact force will be directed to spread everywhere. The plastic itself will not be damaged to a great extent. This kind of PS plastic also has excellent insulation properties. It can maintain its stable performance even in high temperature or humid environments, so it is also an ideal material for manufacturing electronic parts. In the specific processing process of PS plastic, we only need some ordinary equipment. Because of its low melting point, when we process PS plastic, we can easily process a small part of PS plastic product in just a few seconds.

Automotive industry: PS plastic can also be used in the automotive industry. Some external parts in cars, such as lampshades, are made of PS plastic. Some mechanical parts of cars can also be made of PS plastic. For example, some gears of automobile parts, or electronic casings.

Because PS plastic has very good light transmittance, it can also be used in the optical industry. Used to make optical glass or optical instruments. For example, the lampshades in our homes are made of PS plastic. However, PS plastic also has some disadvantages. If it encounters a slightly higher temperature, it will melt and deform. Therefore, it is not suitable to use PS plastic in some high-temperature environments.
