HIPS is a material that can be used as packaging filler, pressed into sheets, molded into products, or delivered in PS sheets or rolls. Its characteristic dimensional stability allows it to be used in low-strength structures, and its natural translucent form makes it suitable for food processing applications.

The largest dedicated use of HIPS is as a packaging and disposable material, particularly for food packaging materials and eating utensils. Major applications include packaging containers for daily use. Cups for vending machines and dispensing, various lids, trays, bowls, and so on. Disposables such as plates and dishes, bottle caps, safety razors, pens, etc. are also part of the uses where HIPS is consumed in large quantities.

Instrumentation and consumer appliances are one of the growing markets for HIPS products, including small meters, refrigerator interiors and interiors, television housings, air conditioning components, business machines, and audio and video cassettes.
