Plastics Industry Development Status
2024-01-09 11:10Plastics Industry Development Status
According to UNEP (United Nations Environment Program), under normal development, global plastics production in 2050 will consume 20% of the world's total oil supply, of which 25% are disposable plastic products, and the carbon emissions released from the production and use of plastics account for 15% of the total global budget.
Ethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polystyrene (PS), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) account for 75% of China's total production and consumption of plastics, with the majority being used in packaging and building materials. Assuming that all plastics in the packaging industry are single-use plastics, single-use plastics account for 37% of China's plastic production in 2021. It is calculated that China's plastic waste in 2020 will be about 84 million tons, about 53 million tons will be incinerated, and the rest will be landfilled or scattered in nature.
The goal for single-use plastics in China is to completely phase out single-use plastics by 2040 and to achieve a 100% plastics recycling rate by 2050, which would allow for a carbon-neutral plastics industry within the timeframe planned.
